The History of La Maison Verte

August 14, 2007

La Maison Verte is unique since it is owned by the non-profit Association Parmi-Elles, a group of women whose objective since the early 1980′s has been to set up business ventures that create jobs for women.

In 1981, l’Association Parmi-Elles received Federal and Provincial assistance and found seventy local investors to support eh establishment of a greenhouse to grow seedlings for reforestation. In the fall of 1982 the first greenhouse was built and La Maison Verte was born.

Initially, La Maison Verte was contracted by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to grow 2 million seedlings. In 1988 and 1991 contracts with forest companies increased production to 6 million seedlings. Since then production has gradually increased to about 9 million seedlings annually, mainly for our two forest company customers.

Over the years La Maison Verte has contributed greatly to the regional economy and created jobs for the community. We now provide employment for eight full time and sixty seasonal employees.
